Racing returns to Red Dirt Raceway this weekend with micro sprints and non-wing sprints

By John Rittenoure, MEEKER, Okla. (August 27, 2018) - Over the past two months all has been quiet at Red Dirt Raceway as the track was on summer break. Now racing returns to the quarter-mile oval this weekend with a two-day show that kicks off a fall schedule that will see racing weekly racing through October 20.

The NOW600 National Micro Sprint tour returns on Saturday for the East/West Showdown and a trio of Oklahoma drivers lead the points chase. Daniel Shaffer of Dewey leads the stock non-wing division with two victories on the season. Chickasha driver Jim Woods holds a slim two-point lead over Daison Pursley of Locust Grove in the winged A-class while Ryder Laplante of Calera leads Ryan Timms of Oklahoma City with five victories. All three classes will be in action Saturday.

Flat track motorcycles will take on the Red Dirt oval on Saturday also. Drivers from throughout the state will be on hand for some thrilling two-wheel racing action.

Racing continues on Sunday as the NOW600 micros return for a second day of action and will be joined by the USAC Wingless Sprint Cars of Oklahoma for the Meeker 50.

Danny Smith of Sand Springs leads Brett Wilson of Coweta by just two points in the standings and both drivers have posted victories in the series at Red Dirt Raceway this season. Wilson won the USAC season opener in March while Smith won when the non-wing sprints returned in May.

The USAC sprints will end the night of racing with a 50-lap feature.

Gate open on Saturday at 4 p.m. with racing getting underway at 6. Adult admission is $10. High school students and younger will be admitted for free.

On Sunday gates open at 4 with racing at 6. General admission is $15 and high school students and younger will be admitted free.

Red Dirt Raceway is located on state highway 18 between Chandler and Shawnee. Exit I-44 at Chandler and follow highway 18 south. From I-40 take the highway 18 exit and head north through Meeker.
